Crossing the Line

Disembarking after a long international flight, I enter the terminal bleary-eyed; a familiar routine undertaken many times before. The customs gate routine is the same, passports and documents in hand as I approach the end of the line. The customs official gestures at me to cross the line and approach his station, where I duly hand my documents over to him.
